The Sly McFly’s All Star Band takes over Thursdays.

Spread out onstage at Sly McFly’s last Thursday, each veteran musician that is a member of Sly McFly’s All Star Band has plenty of room. On the far left side of the stage facing the crowd is Mike Schermer, who also plays with Maria Muldaur. To his right is bassist Paul Olguin—filling in for local favorite Dennis Murphy. In the corner sits drummer David Tucker, who also plays with Sista Monica and in Moving Parts. Situated behind his keyboards is Dale Ockerman, a former member of the Doobie Brothers and a current member of Moving Parts and the White Album Ensemble.

Just like the stage setup, each member of the local supergroup gives his other bandmates plenty of room to maneuver freely while performing. On Mose Allison’s “Your Mind Is on Vacation,” Schermer lets loose with a long, impressive guitar solo followed by an impressive yet effortless-looking piano solo by Ockerman.

After the song, which was sung by Ockerman, Tucker takes over the vocal duties on a smooth version of Taj Mahal’s “She Took the Katy (and Left Me a Mule to Ride).” Throughout the evening, the veteran musicians tear through songs like the Professor Longhair version of “Big Chief” and B.B. King’s “The Thrill Is Gone.”

Before Schermer announces the band will be “taking a pause for the cause,” he informs the enthusiastic audience that he and his bandmates will be playing Sly McFly’s every Thursday night for the rest of their lives.

With such an abundance of talent onstage, let’s hope he’s not kidding.

The Sly McFly’s All Stars perform every Thursday night at Sly McFly’s, 700 Cannery Row in Monterey, at 9pm. 649-8050.
