Our Readers’ Heroes

Three weeks ago, we invited readers to nominate “Local Heroes”—people who are making a difference in their communities—to be recognized in this issue of the Weekly. There were too many to fit in these pages. Here, we offer a nod of thanks to a few.

::George and Nancy McInnis::

George is a lawyer and Nancy is a real estate agent but I don’t know how they practice either of those professions because they contribute so much time to so many causes, among them Dorothy’s Place, Meals on Wheels, Younglife, Palma High School board, etc. They are wonderful, committed people who, I think, have been way under-recognized for all they have done.

<>::Darby Worth::</>

Check out Darby Worth in Carmel Valley. She is awesome, and carries the flag of civic mindfulness like no one else I know.

She is tireless in raising consciousness in matters of politics, ecology, and social justice. She can be found at the Peace and Justice Center in New Monterey. Tell her one of her friends and big fan nominated her. She deserves it.

Mabelle Lernoud Monterey

::Joyce Vandevere::

I nominate Joyce Vandevere if she hasn’t already won. Winner of the 2000 Monterey County Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union Atkinson Award, she served on the Monterey County Commission on the Status of Women, among other things. A keeper of the flame, her dedication and hard work are inspiring.

::Juana Enriquez::

Juana Enriquez, leader of the fight for justice at the Monterey Bay Travelodge and the 27th Assembly District Woman of the Year, is one of those “ordinary folks who simply decided to do something good, and then worked very hard to make sure it happened.”

::Dan and Scott Miller::

In response to your search for local heroes, may I offer two Pacific Grove residents? Third generation Pagrovians Dan and Scott Miller have helped restore trust in Pacific Grove government.

Both these Millers are men of integrity. They love their hometown. They respect and honor the trust we have placed in them. They have encouraged the public to participate in decisions which affect our community. They have made a difference.
