We’re All Happy Here
There seems to be an effort afoot in Pacific Grove to characterize the new Council in a very fractious, negative light. I say this is mostly a case of the political “outs” wanting back “in.”

I must say I do not see it. We are getting along well and new alliances between members of each political “side” are being formed. It is true that some new things being tried by the Council have succeeded while others have not. Gosh, I would say that is to be expected with a new group on board and a new mayor.

This is a great deal of change. But, I want the public to know that we are all up to the task. Mayor Jim Costello has succeeded so far in bringing his team together and we are beginning to move forward. Council meetings have become civilized and productive and meaningful discussion is taking place in an atmosphere of mutual respect. I enjoyed Ryan Masters’ amusing article [“Shiny Happy People,” March 17-23] about the dynamics of the new council.

We have a new local city attorney in David Laredo who has strong ties to our town. I know him as a man who has skill in bringing people together. Councilmember Ron Schenk told us that we needed some “grace” to move forward. I think we have been blessed with some.
—Susan Goldbeck, PG City Councilmember | Pacific Grove

Kids Need School
Thank you for your article outlining the societal benefits to preschool [“‘Everybody Waits,’” March 10-16]. For all of the positive reasons that you cited, the Junior Leagues of California are co-sponsoring AB 172, which would make preschool available to all California families.

I encourage readers to write to legislators and to the governor to express support for the Preschool for All concept.

You can send e-mails to elected officials at www.assembly.ca.gov. —Susie Saunders Brusa | Salinas

Alisal Rocks
After reading your article “School Of Life” [March 17-23], I give Alisal High School extreme kudos! I can only say finally at least one school has realized that our kids are going out into the work force rather unprepared for real life. I would hope all of our high schools will take note of what Alisal High is doing for their students and follow suit! —Christine Allwardt | Salinas
