BELGIAN MASTER: Of Import: DJ Raoul Belmans adds Monterey to his international resumé Friday.
Belgian Master
DJ Raoul Belmans spins at Octane.
Raoul Belmans has DJed all over the world, in far-flung locales like Cape Town, South Africa and El Juarez, Mexico, but it’s a show in Kazakhstan that stands out in his mind as the most interesting. In an email exchange with the Weekly from his office in Leuven, Belgium, Belmans says, “I played the first ever open air party/rave over there. People seemed to have enjoyed it, because I am going back.”
Though Belmans enjoys traveling, his collaborator in the funky house duo Swirl People, Dimitri Dewever, seems to shy away from the touring life. “He’s not a big party guy,” Belmans says. “I barely get him twice a year to one of my shows.”
Despite differing attitudes towards travel, Belmans and Dewever must enjoy making music together. Their disco-tinged 2004 CD titled Special Combo spawned a dance hit with “We Used to Party,” featuring DJ Heather, and the pair is working on a follow-up CD to be released late this year or early next year. Belmans says it will be full of “deep, funky house music.”
DJ Raoul Belmans performs at Club Octane, 321 Alvarado St. in Monterey, Friday at 9pm. $15/available at www.cluboctane.com 646-9244.
