The $500 Million Local Dream

By redirecting federal funds appropriated to Monterey County, we could affect lasting change.

Two billion dollars. According to the Consolidated Federal Funds Report for Fiscal Year 2004, that’s the coin that comes into Monterey County from Washington, DC every year. Where it should end up is a subject worthy of much debate; there is little debate, however, that it isn’t used as efficiently as it could be. Taking a cue from “The Next Trillion,” and estimating about a quarter of that $2 billion could be more wisely applied, the Weekly compiled a short list of spots where that $500 million could be spent. The following figures are not rooted in rigorous economic analysis but they represent a vision of how revised priorities could fundamentally change the face of Monterey County for the better.
