In 1941, a Japanese submarine sunk the oil tanker Montebello off the coast of Cambria with a single torpedo. While the hull of the 1923 ship remains relatively stable on the sea floor, the oil has increased in value and efforts to extract it are being considered, while the federal government keeps watch on the potential environmental nightmare threatening the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary if the oil leaks out.
