They cap the admission at 3,000– and this sucker sells out every year. The flavor– seared day-boat scallop heirloom tomato custard with micro basil salad, anyone?– knows no limit. (See story, pg. 54.) [MCA]
12:30-4:30pm. 8205 Valley Greens Drive, Carmel. $95. 1-800-965-4827, http://www.tomatofest.com.
CARLOS MENCIA AT FOX THEATER • Oct. 7Almost $100 may be a little steep for two seats, but the healing laughter summoned by the One Who Hates Stupid People should pay for itself if Mencia can put together half the show he did last time he was in town. The guy’s gotten in trouble for allegedly ripping off jokes, but the line he cracked at Sherwood Hall has been co-opted a million times by lesser comics: “We’re gonna build a wall to keep out the illegals?” he asked. “Who’s gonna build it?” [MCA]
7pm. 241 S. Main St., Salinas. $46. 758-8459, http://www.foxtheatersalinas.com.
BEST OF MOMIX AT SUNSET CENTER • Nov. 1That Moses Pendleton went from farm boy to founding an avante-garde dance troupe is only one of many fascinating aspects of Momix. Weirdly colorful costumes, unconventional props, experimental music, elaborate choreography, ballet, modern dance, acrobatics… and this only begins to describe the spectacle. [WR]
8pm. San Carlos between Eighth and Ninth, Carmel. $45-$55. 620-2040, http://www.sunsetcenter.com.
THE DOOBIE BROTHERS AT GOLDEN STATE THEATRE • Oct. 2For those who like their rock smooth and soulful, The Doobie Brothers are rolling into town to perform hits like “Listen to the Music” and “China Grove.” Although vocalist Michael McDonald is not touring with the band, there could be appearances by regional musicians Tiran Porter and Dale Ockerman. Both had stints with this Grammy-winning outfit. [ST]
8pm. 417 Alvarado St., Monterey. $55-$125. 372-3800. http://www.goldenstatetheatre.com.
12TH ANNUAL TRUFFLE DINNER AT BERNARDUS • Dec. 5Don’t trifle over truffles. They cost too much. (Hint: There’s an up-to-$4,000-a-pound reason that people call them “diamonds.”) And they taste (way) too good, especially in the hands of a man named Cal Stamenov, who learned how to work with them from a French visionary named Jean-Louis Palladin. Stamenov’s evening starts with a cocktail reception starringCuvee Champagne and Grey Goose Black Truffle Martinis, then parades through six courses of infinite indulgence. “There is so much complexity in each truffle it’s hard to describe them,” he says. “I can say that you open a bag and you could smell it 100 yards away.” [MCA]
8pm. 415 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley. $200.658-3550,http://www.bernardus.com.
