Falling Starbucks
Starbucks shutters, leaving another vacancy at Seaside's City Center.
Sorry, Seaside-area Starbucks addicts. With the closure of the store on the corner of Fremont Boulevard and Broadway Avenue, you'll have to go to the one on Canyon Del Rey and Del Monte boulevards, by Home Depot.
Or the one in the Del Rey Oaks Safeway, just a few blocks up Canyon Del Rey.
Or the one in Sand City's big box complex, just a few blocks down Del Monte.
The shuttering of the City Center store is part of a move to close hundreds of Starbucks joints nationwide. With so many local franchises remaining, patrons probably don't need to lose sleep over the coffee goliath's fate.
But the same can't be said of the beleaguered City Center development, which has struggled since its opening to fill lingering vacancies.
“The bigger loss for us is just its presence on a very key intersection," says Assistant City Manager Jill Anderson. "It had become a gathering place for the community."
Filling the center's other empty storefronts, meanwhile, is going slower than city officials had hoped. The Fresh & Easy supermarket slated for City Center is still in the works, but won't open in the fall as originally planned.
“That would be overly optimistic at this point," Anderson says. “Everything lost a sense of urgency as the economy continued to decline. Things are moving forward, but they’re just moving forward more slowly.”
