Gavin Newsom drops out of Governor's race

In a surprise move, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced that he was dropping out of the California governor's race.

Newsom, who announced his campaign more than a year ago, was lagging behind state Attorney General (and former Governor) Jerry Brown, despite the fact that Brown has not even officially announced his candidacy.

According to the latest Field Poll, Brown was 20 points ahead of Newsom, double the lead he had in March, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Newsom cited family reasons and his current mayoral duties as the reasons for the sudden decision.
