UPDATE: Michael Clark, 59, of Castroville has been identified as the man shot by police. He was pronounced dead at 1:24pm at Natividad Medical Center where he was being treated.
Seaside police officers responding to a call of a man causing a disturbance at Cal's Monterey Motors shot a man this morning after he allegedly opened fire at the cops while being taken into custody.
Two Cal's salesmen, who asked not to be named, say Michael Clark came into the business shortly before 11am looking for a car. After some time, Clark became agitated and accused the salesmen of stealing his car keys. Staff then called police.
When officers arrived, the salesmen say Clark was uncooperative with police. The salesmen say one of the three officers who made contact with Clark used a Taser on him, but officials are not yet confirming if a Taser was used.
One of the salesman claimed that as Clark fell down, he pulled out a weapon. "That's when another officer shot him," one of the salesmen says.
But Seaside Police Chief Vicki Myers says Clark pulled the gun out and fired at police, before officers returned fire.
Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo, whose office is handling the investigation, could not confirm how many shots were fired or how many times Clark was struck by gunfire.
He did say none of the officers were harmed.
“The officers are safe. They are doing as well as can be expected," Myers says.
A former employee at the dealership says he recognized Clark when he saw him injured in the parking lot.
"He is a nice guy, but he looks like he may need medication, like for schizophrenia or something," Michael Hannas, a Seaside resident, says.
The names of the Seaside police officers involved have not been released.
This is Seaside second officer-involved shootings this year, and the third shooting involving police in the Monterey Peninsula in just three weeks. Flippo is handling all the investigations.
Myers says there is "no such thing as a routine call" to police and adds that police alway "hope for the best and plan for the worst."
"People need to understand guns are not toys," she says. "And if you point your gun to a police officers it is to take his life."
