Postcards of Monterey County - June 7, 2019.

Jonathan Ruiz takes a break while skateboarding at Natividad Creek Park.

Postcards From Monterey County is a weekly, black-and-white photo feature highlighting life throughout the diverse communities of our region.

Jonathan Ruiz slips his t-shirt back on, presses play on his cell phone to get the music going and pushes off—twisting, turning and sometimes barely balancing as he careens around the worn cement ramps of the skatepark at Natividad Creek Park in Salinas.

"I make it my gym, because it's free," says the 27-year-old Ruiz, catching his breath between tricks. "It keeps me in good shape."

Ruiz lives in Salinas and hangs out with the friends at the park—a gray, angular block amid the green trees in East Salinas.
