In the indie music scene in Europe, CDs are big and vinyl is not, Ryan McCaffrey learned during a recent tour across the pond with his band Go By Ocean. He sells his music in those two formats and on cassette tapes. His recent EP release has been “really DIY,” he said in a recent radio interview. Get it? This music is alternative, through and through. Hailing from San Francisco, the band has been described by that city’s alt-weekly as a blend of Oasis and My Morning Jacket. For an authentic sound, McCaffrey mines his own experience recovering from addiction and what he calls his “dark hours.” The result is a mellow and deeply textured album brimming with muted optimism.
