You know how professional golf tournaments work: the same group of pros arrive, the fans pay up and are roped off and play begins. But that’s not how it goes at the TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational. For one thing, it brings in golfers from the PGA, the LPGA, PGA Tour Champions and the tours into one field, hitting from different tees based upon average driving distance to make things even at the Peninsula’s most renowned courses—Spyglass Hill Golf Course, the Links at Spanish Bay and the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links. There are pros and amateurs and a team component, with $300,000 at stake. Past winners include the likes of Johnny Miller, Mark Calcavecchia, Juli Inkster, Tom Lehman and John Daly. Now for the best part: it’s free to spectators. That’s right, free. And there are no ropes. Fans get up close to some of the best golfers in the world on some of the most challenging courses. You know, people would pay for that experience. Tee times may vary. [DF]
