The final night of Monterey International Film Week brings German expressionist director Fritz Lang to the big screen with his 1927 futuristic film, complete with live pipe organ accompaniment. Metropolis tells the story of a world where the world is seperated into two classes. The thinkers make plans, but lack the concept of how things work and the workers cannot create ideas. Each group works independantly, but cannot function without the other. The film gives a commentary on the class structure of the modern world when one thinker breaks rank and visits the workers world and is horrified at his discovery. [NC]
