A young, white woman boards a train. She flirts her way into conversation with a naive, black businessman. Their dialogue reflects the larger social issues that affect their interaction, exploring racial inequality, power and stereotypes. This is the premise of The Dutchman, a play by Amari Baraka, aka Leroi Jones, that won an Obie (an off-Broadway theatre award) in 1964 for its powerful illumination of heavy racial tensions. But the play isn’t just all talk; a shocking turn of events shifts the gears from critical analysis to critical action. MPC student actors Timothy McCray and Camille Marcello play the lead roles of Clay and Lula, respectively. [NC]
