Tango is a fusion of Spanish flamenco, European waltz, African rhythms, Brazilian milonga, Uruguayan habanera music, and other ingredients, all stirred up in the multi-cultural cabarets of late-1800s Buenos Aires, Argentina. So says that other Argentinean cultural landmark, Jorge Luis Borges. Tango is a music, a dance and a style to Argentineans, who were so passionate about its national identity that they rioted when Astor Piazzolla mixed it with some dissonant jazz. The reception should be more cheerful when the Tango Buenos Aires dance company performs this Saturday at the Sunset Center. These ambassadors of authentic tango have amazed audiences on every continent with their frenetic dance moves. [WR]
8pm. Sunset Center, San Carlos and Ninth, $54-$62. 620-2048 or sunsetcenter.org.
