Monterey Peninsula College String Ensemble features local oboe soloist Ms. Angie Burtz, who has been with major symphony and orchestra groups in this area. They perform Down A River of Time, a concerto for oboe and strings. Time, commissioned as a memorial tribute to the father of the original recording artist, by composer Eric Ewazen, is a contemporary lyrical and tonal piece in the vein of Aaron Copeland. The first movement describes the onward flow of time; the second movement evokes feelings of loss; the third is a musical metaphor for the squaring of shoulders to face the future, buoyed by happy memories. J.S. Bach’s “Orchestra Suite No. 1” and “Suite for String Orchestra” by early 20th century composer Frank Bridge will also be performed. [SL]

7:30-9pm. Monterey Peninsula College, 980 Fremont St., $10 at the door. 646-4200 or 646-4057.
