Rider McDowell and company (that's as in theater people, not he and his wife's Carmel-based Airborne vitamins) bring back the 1950s spooky interactive theater format that thrilled audiences of yesteryear, even as they were laughing their Cherry Cokes out their noses. With a title like Zombie Voodoo Scream Party, there's no hiding the campy shenanigans behind the outlandish story of Egyptologist and monster hunter Cosgrove, who tries to win a monster pageant with his captives Mr. HillBilly, Draculana and Garganta the gorilla. Interlaced with B-horror shorts and "freak" shows, this musical is bound for Off-Broadway next year after alternately clowning and scaring the Vitamin Water out of Golden State audiences' noses. Proceeds benefit Hospice Foundation and Carmel River School. [WR]
