The 134-year-old Carl Rosa Opera stages two--just two--nights of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas at the Sunset. On Tuesday they perform HMS Pinafore, a tongue-in-cheek tale of class-crossed lovers that modern audiences may liken to The Titanic's Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, but nautical miles ahead in laughs. On Wednesday they perform The Mikado, drawing from Gilbert's prompt book (kind of like a shooting script) to faithfully recreate the 1885 production to a tee, unintentional racism and sexism intact. This award-winning one-two punch of old-time musical chicanery comes this way via sold-out shows in England. [WR]
8pm/both shows. Sunset Center, San Carlos and Ninth, Carmel. $77/each show. 620-2048. http://www.sunsetcenter.org.
