Though the exact date and location of beer’s invention cannot be determined, historians generally concur that the fermented beverage has been around for at least 9,000 years. Strangely, beer appeared in different places around the globe concurrently and independently. Could it be that beer is a fundamental component of human existence? Connoisseurs discuss this and other philosophical ponderings at this weekend’s Monterey Beer Festival, which features over fifty breweries from around the world. With an authentic beer garden, revelers can experience the German style of drinking—without the stein (attendees receive a souvenir glass instead). Live music completes Saturday's hoppy atmosphere. For those seeking food with their frothy beverage, the Monterey Culinary Center pairs cuisine and beer from eight countries in a strolling dinner Friday. (6-10pm; $65; Culinary Center on Cannery Row). [KC]
