“I’m 5 foot 3 inches,” Paul Ogata told Monterey last time he was in town. “My family tree was a bonsai...I shop at the Big & Tall store just to freak the clerks out.” Ogata’s class of sass was enough to claim the San Francisco International Comedy Competition last year—which paused at the Golden State Theater in December—joining a hierarchy of humor that includes past champions Robin Williams, Dana Carvey and Dane Cook. “It means a lot to me,” Ogata said after the competition. “You don’t see a lot of success and opportunities for Asians in entertainment so it’s great anytime you can make a dent in the machine in a non-William Hung kind of way.” [MCA]
