The pros at Western Stage incorporate local youth and seasoned veterans, climb mountains and forge streams in this production of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. The Sound of Music---created in what is known as the Golden Age of the musical---is the coming-of-age story of Maria, a nun striving to find happiness and fulfillment in the uncertain beginnings of World War II with a military widower and his precocious family. Director Anne-Marie Hunter calls upon the talents of Reg Huston and Lauren Cheney to play the iconic Captain Von Trapp and Maria, respectively, and utilizes a cast of young talent from all over the Peninsula to bring the popular songs like "Do, Re, Mi" and "So Long, Farewell" to life once more.
8pm/Fri-Sat; 2pm/Sun. Western Stage Main Stage, 411 Central Ave., Salinas. $30/adults; $20/children, seniors, military. 770-6181. http://www.westernstage.com/.
