Half the marine biologists here seem to be rock stars on the side. The head electrician is a spot-on George W. Bush impersonator with a hilarious Cachagua hibilly sense of humor. The people's champion bartender at the sublime Portola Restaurant has a gift for eye-popping graphic art. The chefs, the divers, the volunteers: all whip-smart and cool as the marine canyon in our laps. Which begs the question: If the people behind the creatures, cuisine and exhibits are this cool without the benefit of fur, fins or tentacles—and the whole package, pot-bellied seahorses and pharaoh cuttlefish included, is free for locals through Dec. 14—is the Aquarium not the raddest converted cannery on earth? [MCA]
10am-6pm. Monterey Bay Aquarium, 886 Cannery Row, Monterey. Free (Monterey County residents must present valid identification and proof of residence at the main entrance). 648-4888. http://www.montereybayaquarium.org.
