Edward Scissor Hands, easily one of the darkest holiday movies ever to be released (rivaled only by Tim Burton’s subsequent gothic phenomenon, A Nightmare Before Christmas) appears in all its quirky glory in large-scale horizontal form. In case anyone has lost out on the film, Johnny Depp plays an unfinished Frankenstein-esque creation with (guess) scissors as hands. But where Frankenstein lacks a heart, Edward’s surges with goodwill. Taken in by a suburban family, he becomes a neighborhood curiosity, celebrated for his lawn hedging talent. A romance with his guest family’s daughter (Winona Rider at the peak of her career) proves to be a fatal attraction. A little peculiar? Catch the classic A Christmas Story afterward, a light dose of family dysfunction narrated by a man reflecting on a childhood Christmas. Ralphie has one wish, a BB rifle, but encounters protest from his mother. “You’ll shoot your eye out!” With triple-dog dares, a ridiculous visit to a mall Santa, and ludicrous gifts, it's impossible not to leave without a tingle of mirth.
