John "Broadway" Tucker, in 2006, won the Monterey Blues Festival's Artist of the Year award. It's a long road that the former soldier (stationed at Fort Ord in 1967) has travelled to bring his swamp-heat blues to audiences. As far as Poland, where he and his backing Polish musicians have a large following. But he brings it all back home to the Peninsula--like at tonight's gig--with searing guitar, stand-up-and-testify-in-church Hammond organ, down-low bass, and rousing drums. And, of course, that voice that commands audiences with its rich, Mississippi Delta tone, like a preacher bringing it all together.
