Canada has its share of exotic fauna, but its “bright bird of her species” is the Vancouver Sun’s description of soprano Tracy Dahl who arrives this weekend to sing coloratura arias with the Monterey Symphony. “Oh! Quante volte” from Bellini’s The Capulets and the Montagues opens her set in bel canto style, Musetta’s Waltz from La bohème shows off the stage presence that has made her a household name with opera companies throughout the Americas, and the spectacular “Sempre libera” that closes Act I of La Traviata supplies her pièce de resistance. Dahl sings higher and faster than her non-coloratura colleagues, and with "a voice filled with sunshine, rainbows and laser light" according to Opera magazine. Guest conductor Marko Letonja also includes orchestral episodes from Bellini, Puccini and Verdi operas, and opens the program with Andrej Panufnik’s Sinfonia Sacra, composed to honor the 1000th anniversary of Polish Christianity.
