No resting on the 7th day for Sci-Fi Week. Tonight's double feature starts with Independence Day. It's a straighforward alien vs. earthling movie whose lasting signifigance is its foreshadowing of events that take place in the Bush administration, worthy of hours of 'altered states' debate. But Mel Gibson's Road Warrior is the heavyweight on this ticket: part two of a trilogy that can, and does, stand alone as the definitive, post-apocalyptic wasteland flick. Tricked out vehicles, dramatic narration, overpowering warriors waging perpetual war trying to get the oil of the huddled and waning people in a desert...this really is supposed to be science fiction.
7pm. Golden State Theatre, 417 Alvarado St., Monterey. $10/both films; $45/series pass; $25/student series pass. 372-4555. http://www.goldenstatetheatre.com.
