Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds star in this 1952 musical comedy about Hollywood's transition between silent film and talkies, as well as the wacky dynamics of its stars as they navigate this brave new screen world. Its many sparkling songs have achieved a life of their own, especially the seminal "Singin' in the Rain," which accompanies Kelly during his famous...singing in the rain dance number. The spry dancing, singing, acting and choreography belies the greuling work that went behind this production, which caused illness, and is referenced in the film itself. Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin make up the central trio on the 1949 Academy Award-winning On the Town, based on the Broadway stage musical about sailors out on leave who encounter the bright lights, the bustle and the women of New York City. Partly shot on location, this exuberant romp follows the three eager gents who try to soak up as much on-shore life as they can in one day--and do. The peppy main number, "New York, New York," is a classic. This pair of films should blast away any foul weather blues.
