The League of Women Voters of Salinas Valley and Monterey Peninsula believes kids should learn about the civilized affair we call general and special elections. To that end, they give Monterey (and San Benito) county students a taste of what they have to look forward to after their 18th birthday with a mock election, taking place online at mockelection.org and on paper ballots (hopefully not butterfly chad ballots). Teachers and parents are encouraged to guide kids through this learning excercise that teaches them one of the fundamental tenants of democracy. Results can be compared to the actual election results. (Check out the surprising results from previous years' mock elections--the political landscape would look a little different if kids were in charge.)
Ongoing until Feb. 1. Monterey County, Monterey and San Benito county, Free. 595-8253 or pguest@redshift.com.
