It's well-known that good ol' Monterey was a cradle of the counter-culture hippie movement in the '60s. So what happened? Re-live (or learn about) this dynamic era of war protest, creative expression and free love at this three-movies-for-one-price weekend film series at the beautifully restored Golden State. Monterey Pop is first on the bill, a brilliant, visceral documentary of the '67 Summer of Love concert with Janis Joplin, The Who, Simon and Garfunkel, Jimi Hendrix and scores of others. See amazing footage of Hendrix in the show that launched his meteoric career. Next on the bill is a restored print of the long-unavailable Beatles' second movie Help, with lots of mop-topped hijinks, as the rising stars play era-defining songs like "Yesterday" and "Ticket to Ride." Third screening is the well-received 2007 musical film Across the Universe, an inspiring Beatles music-suffused period piece which combines gritty and touching real-life footage with animation. Wear your best bell-bottoms and bring some daisies. [RC]
