Lipizzaner stallions gracefully gallop across the Monterey Fairgrounds in what has been dubbed ‘equestrian ballet.’ Today, the World Famous White Stallions dazzle audiences with their elegance and graceful movements--but they once faced near extinction. During World War II when Austria was poised to surrender, Col. Alois Podhajsky feared putting the last of these precious stallions into unfriendly hands. But, as Disney documented in its 1963 film “Miracle of the White Stallions,” the breed was saved-- and today, its legacy elicits the memory of a more regal past. Having performed for over 26 million people throughout the Americas and Europe, these handsome stallions are a time machine through history to a moment when gallantry and nobility reigned. [KC]
