Paper Wing Theater takes us to the edge again with the play Killer Joe, a 1993 dark comedy by Tony award-winner Tracy Letts. Killer Joe is so extreme that reviews voice subtle warnings amidst their praise. Curtainup.com calls it "ugly, obscene and unthinkably violent" (Neil Simon it is not), while also calling it a "phenomenon" and source of "optimism" for theater. Amanda Plummer of Pulp Fiction fame and Scott Glenn from Silence of the Lambs starred in a New York production; Peter Bogdonovich, who directed The Last Picture Show, is doing the film. The story follows a debauched family who attempt to hire crooked cop killer Joe Cooper to murder one of their own for insurance money for drugs. But without money to begin with, one of them must pay for Joe's services with sex. It goes downhill from there, but, says the N.Y. Daily News, "It knows exactly where it's going."
