Each July, California Summer Music invades Pebble Beach for one of the most intense music camps for advanced students on the West Coast. Featuring outstanding faculty from the Bay Area and youthful prodigies from many countries, master classes in instrumental performance and composition occupy the campus of Robert Louis Stevenson School for three solid weeks. Both rare and familiar works for strings and piano—from Bach and Schubert to Miaskovsky and Gershwin—are set to fire up the student's excitement whose performances are free to the public. Student performances come with an edge and energy that sometimes elude even the pros, resulting in some of the most exciting and memorable concerts. It is also a great way to whet the appetite for the upcoming Bach Festival. [SM]
