When Pacific Grove residents start to display glowing Asian lanterns on their doorsteps, that means the 100-plus-year-old Feast of Lanterns is upon us. P.G. has spun a doomed love story into five days of celebration that includes a pageant, fireworks and parades. The heart of the festivities occurs on Saturday evening when the lighted boat parade and pageant begin on the pier. The pageant is presided over by the Royal Court, consisting of nine local high school girls who receive scholarships for outstanding community service. As lighted boats drift by and fireworks light the sky, the pageant reenacts an ancient Mandarin legend, Blue Willow. Pacific Grove's version, of course, adds a local twist to the tale: Rather than turning into birds to escape, the star-crossed lovers sail to the sky as...Monarch butterflies. For a full list of the weekend's events, including fun for the family, see the Feast of Lantern's website. [KC]
