The Films in the Forest Festival jumps from last night's 1961 Gidget surf flick to 2007's epic The Golden Compass, about an orphan named Lyra (played by a precocious Dakota Richards, not the ubiquitous Dakota Channing) who must embark on a perilous voyage to the North Pole and encounter the frosty and beautiful Marias (Nichole Kidman). Turn-of-the-century sensibilities and style mix with futurist inventions with mystical animal demons. The story is big, British and protracted, but the CGI is tip-top, a visual Disneyland for kids. Dress warmly and bring refreshments.
8:30pm (dusk). Outdoor Forest Theater, Santa Rita and Mountain View, Carmel. $6. 626-1681. http://www.foresttheaterguild.org.
