Photojournalist Tom Graves exhibits his Heroes All! Nisei Veterans of WWI and Korea, composed of portraits of Japanese-American WWII and Korean War veterans. "Nisei," Japanese for "second generation," refers in this case to the sons of Japanese immigrants who, even after internment and being barred from joining the military, signed up in droves when the U.S. military finally admitted them. Their unit, the 442nd regimental combat team, served with distinction. An Armed Forces Day celebration/reception today brings Graves and Nisei veterans onto a panel to talk about the work and the history it immortalizes. Through July 27.
2pm/reception; 10am-5pm/daily museum hours. National Steinbeck Center, 1 Main St., Salinas. $11/adult; discounts for seniors, students, children and group reservations. 775-4721. http://www.steinbeck.org.
