Festivals , like monkeys and men, don't turn 49 on fried artichoke rings alone—that kind of staying power demands other engines to make it go. Think artichoke parades, mad cooking demos and classic car shows. Picture artichoike agro-art projects, artichoke eating contests and quality wine tasting. Taste artichoke burritos, exotically-marinated artichoke hearts and slapping farmers market-fresh produce from local fields. And listen in: This year, the Johnny Clay Band, The Shane Dwight Blues Band and The Marshall Tucker Band go off on Saturday—and La Ventana, MALO and War close with killer thistle-saluting sets on Sunday. Bring the aioli backpack. [MCA]

10am-6pm/Sat; 10am-5pm/Sun. Castroville, Downtown Castroville (follow the signs), $4. 831-633-2465 or artichoke-festival.org.
