The Clean House examines the lives of a happily married couple and successful doctors, Lane and Charles. Early in the production, Lane states, "I didn't study medicine to clean my house." To eliminate the burden of household chores, Lane and Charles hire a housekeeper, Matilde, a stand-up comedian who reveals that she vehemently hates housework. While Matilde quests to concoct the perfect joke instead of cleaning house, Lane's sister assumes responsibility for keeping a clean house—a backdrop for the always messy dynamics of character relationships. Runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, Clean House playwright Sara Ruhl has been hailed by Variety as "an original and audacious voice." (See Theater story.) [SK]
