"Without [art] we are just animals--we fight, we sleep, we eat. Art is what makes us human." So says one of the interviewees from the powerful, new documentary The Rape of Europa. It takes the audience into the WWII Nazi machinery as it tore through Europe, taking or destroying Europe's most prized art--including 27 Rembrandts, Klimt's Gold Portrait and many more--over a campaign that lasted 12 years. There were, however, people who fought back against the evil designs of a failed painter. The tightly crafted story of theft, destruction and survival carries "enough drama for at least three Hollywood movies" says the SF Weekly.
