Robert E. Sherwood is a giant among American playwrights. A three-time winner of the Pulitzer for Drama, the 1936 film adaptation of his play The Petrified Forest is said to have made Humphrey Bogart. And now the Staff Players Repertory Company choose that 1935 work to open their season. An auspicious choice. The play tells the Depression-era story of three desperate people--an intellectual, an artist and a gangster--marooned in a desert cafe who arrive at a hard-earned nobility despite their hard luck. Nick Hovick directs and stars alongside the naturalistic Erin Wray. [WR]
