This biennial spectacle of booming music, sacral theater and Aztec dance thrives on the kind of vibrant life that only El Teatro Campesino can pull off—only it doesn’t take place at ETC’s playhouse. Rather, more than 70 actors will swarm the Old Mission in San Juan Bautista, weaving classical Spanish and Nahuatl song (English libretto) into a miracle story penned by Luis Valdez and humming with holiday light and spiritual subtext. Technically, they’ll occupy three performance areas. In reality, they’ll be everywhere. “As soon as we walk through the door, we are on stage,” one actor told the Weekly. "We’ll be next to every seat in the house—there will be something to be seen everywhere in the mission.” [MCA]
