Since time machines are hard to come by these days, the Monterey History Fest--a two-week smorgasbord of re-enactments, art exhibits, tours, lectures and events--is the next best thing when it comes to traveling back into the past. Today's 11am kick-off event brings together historical and modern day locals on the lawn of Colton Hall for refreshments and reminiscing. And that's just a fraction of the first week of events. Here's a another chunk: 19th century re-enactments at Cooper-Molera Adobe 11am-3pm Sat; Geoffrey Dunn book signing and presentation at Monterey Maritime Museum 1-3pm Sat; a Fandango party at Custom House Plaza 7-9pm Sat; home, walking and van tours of the Robert Louis Stevenson House, Monterey's "Homes from the Past," the Presidio, the Old Whaling Station and other locations. Some of Monterey's most knowledgeable historians are on hand to fill in the blanks between our founding in 1770 and today. [WR]
