Though her work has been shown at the 2006 Whitney Biennial and the Chicago Art Institute, this is photographer Angela Strassheim's first solo museum exhibition. It's a career-spanning retrospective so these 30 pieces should reveal an evolution to her style. And what is that style? Completely normal scenes captured with such objectivity, formality and depth that they become completely un-normal. Trained as a forensic and biomedical photographer, she reveals the surreal in the suburban landscape with the formal compositions of a Stanley Kubrick film. It is penetrating, hypnotic art. Today's Community Day, free to Monterey County residents, offers the work, an artist lecture, a storyteller and a two-hour workshop in response to Strassheim's photographs. [WR]
