La Llorona, “The Weeping Woman”, is a cautionary tale in Hispanic folklore dating back to the Aztec Empire. A young woman, demeaned and enraged by the adultery committed by her Spaniard husband, takes revenge upon him by drowning their young child. In her afterlife, La Llororna’s spirit roams her village, weeping and crying out to her child, or any child who will answer her call. The hauntingly beautiful musical adaptation of La Llorana’s narrative holds its world premiere at the Western Stage in Salinas . The production’s author and lyricist, Hector Armienta, is an accomplished arts educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. He received grants from Meet the Composer Ca., San Francisco Arts Commission, Arts International, and Opera Pacific to compose La Llorana. The production is part of a continual effort by The Western Stage to develop a multi-cultural theater that speaks to the worth of history in the Salinas community and Monterey County.
