In a rare juxtaposition, the Monterey Symphony offers two monumental symphonic works from different eras for its season opener this weekend: Brahms’ mighty Piano Concerto in D Minor and Bartók’s towering Concerto for Orchestra. The compelling Dubravka Tomsic once again joins the Symphony as soloist in one of the Brahms’ most muscular and demanding scores. Tomsic is an ideal choice, having demonstrated time and again for local audiences her wide artistic range. The work itself, opening with a darkly powerful symphonic statement before the soloist enters, requires exceptional stamina, and with four performances Tomsic will certainly earn her fee. Bartók, who knocked off one masterpiece after another, is best known for his Concerto for Orchestra, a tour de force that engages every orchestral section on virtuosic terms. Boston Symphony conductor Serge Koussevitzky paid Bartók $1000 for this his most American work. Music director Max Bragado conducts. Sherwood Hall hosts the performance Saturday; then the Sunset Center on Sunday and Monday. [SM]
