Luis Valdez has done it again. He brings a new creation to the stage and gives theater lovers without a Carmel budget a slice of dramatic art with La Carpa de Los Rasquachis (The Tent of the Underdogs). The main character of La Carpa is Jesus Pelado, a man who leaves Mexico to make it big as a farmworker in the United States. Dogged by apparitions of Death and the Devil, Pelado guides us through a tale of manipulation and loss through the use of traditional songs known as corridos. As Valdez once told Carl Heyward, “We [El Teatro Campesino] are after the truth about America.”
8pm/Thu-Sat; 2pm/Sun. El Teatro Campesino, 705 4th St., San Juan Bautista. $10-$12/adults; $8/children; $8/Thu. 623-2444. http://www.elteatrocampesino.com.
