Talking about their G-G-Generation. The Monterey Jazz Festival is sponsoring the 5th Annual Next Generation Jazz Festival April 3-5 in downtown Monterey. The opening night Salute to Jazz Education will feature a kick-off concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 3, with performances by judges including pianist George Duke drummer Terri Lyne Carringtons, and sets by the Monterey Jazz Festival Artists-in-Residence and members of the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra. Fifty-seven bing bands, combos and vocal ensembles from six states will compete, with 47 bands from 14 California counties in the finals. The kids go at it in earnest with the competition starting in earnest at 9 am Saturday, April 4 in the Monterey onference Center. At 6:15 pm, to top high school vocal, combo and big band groups will be announced at the Conference Center’s serra ballroom, and at 8 pm Saturday night, the top vocal ensembles, combo and big band finalists play the Next Generation Festival’s Showcase Concert, a preview of bands performing at MJF/52. On Saturday, April 4, the music party moves over the Monterey Live for free performances 10:30am-6pm. (See Music story.) [PW].
