This is the second third of the nine-month Salinas Stories events that tell historical stories about the evolution of Salinas. To get attendees in that 1930s mood, it begins with a screening of Henry Fonda's Academy award winning film Grapes of Wrath (1pm). Close on its heels, Rick Wartzman talks about his book Obscene in the Extreme: The Burning and Banning of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (3:30-5pm). At 5pm it gets a little exclusive with a members-only reception. But the next day, Sunday, it opens up again with Harvey Smith of the National New Deal Preservation Association talking about the New Deal Projects like the Monterey County Courthouse (1-1:30pm), a walking tour of Salinas' New Deal projects, and ending with a screening of New Deal films back at the Steinbeck Center (3-5pm). What a deal. [WR]
