Dubbed a run on "the edge of the Western world," the 24th installment of this adored, dreaded, beautiful, grueling marathon closes down miles of road to offer runners stunning vistas to huff and puff across. Events begin at a Health and Fitness Expo at the Monterey Conference Center (1 Portola Plaza) Friday and Saturday, featuring 50 vendor booths, race clinics by authorities like Bart Yasso of Runners World, and a debut screening of Running the Sahara featuring Charlie Engle. Also on Saturday, the Just Run/Just Kids 3k pulls hundreds of kids for a short jaunt at Prescott and Wave Street in New Monterey, partly benefitting school youth fitness programs. Sunday's big boy is open to spectators only, at Highway 1 and Rio Road, by 7:30am. Whew. Lemme catch my breath. [WR]
