Too many people know of Lyle Lovett for his extracurricular activities—his films with director Robert Altman, his marriage to Julia Roberts, his Eraserhead-like shock of hair—rather than his skills as a musician and onstage entertainer. When Lovett played Carmel's Sunset Center for a Boy and Girls' Club of Monterey fundraiser in 2004, he won the crowd over with his quirky banter and tight Texas swing. Lovett also achieved the seemingly impossible feat of getting the usually staid Carmel crowd up and dancing at the end of the Sunset show when he launched into a couple of immensely uplifting gospel numbers backed by the choir of a Seaside church.
